Welsh Division at Westminster.
During March 2009 members of the
Welsh Division attended the House of Commons as guests of The Rt. Hon Lord
Neil Kinnock of Bedwellty for a lunch to celebrate the formation of a
Welsh Division. The Lunch was arranged to co-inside with the launch of
Tourism Week in the UK.
The guest list was headed by Club Chairman, Grenville Chamberlain and his
wife Liz, Trevor Watson the Club Director General, the three Club Vice
Chairmen with their partners and Brian Richardson, the Executive
Secretary. The Welsh Divisional Officers were accompanied by
representatives from the Welsh Centres together with the newly appointed
Welsh Nominated Member, Lembit Öpik MP. He joined existing Welsh
Nominated Members Morgan Hinder and Nick Haynes. Also invited was David
Chapman from the Welsh Tourism Alliance.
Prior to lunch the attendees undertook a tour of the Palace of Westminster
and were shown behind the scenes of both the House of Lords and the House
of Commons. Following the tour the guests joined Lord Kinnock for a drinks
reception on the terrace overlooking the Thames, where everyone was made
most welcome by our host.
After a wonderful lunch, Lord Kinnock made a speech welcoming The Caravan
Club and especially the Welsh Division to the House of Commons. He
commented on the stature of The Club and the voluntary work undertaken by
its members. David Kidner, Welsh Division Chairman, responded by thanking
Lord Kinnock for hosting the event and outlining the work undertaken by
the Division on behalf of the membership in Wales. He also acknowledged
the support of the Executive Committee for the Welsh Region to achieve
Divisional Status.
To
have the formation of the Welsh Division celebrated at the House of
Commons was very special for those Club members who attended, especially
as Wales has been recognised within The Caravan Club in the same way as
both the Scottish and Irish Divisions.
An excellent day was had by all
who attended and the Welsh Division would like to express their sincere
thanks to The Rt. Hon. Lord Neil Kinnock for hosting this very successful
event and The Club’s PR Department, especially Fiona Bewers, for
assisting with the arrangements.
